Today is World AIDS Day.

December 1 is World AIDS Day. Did you know?

  • New York City is at the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS crisis: According to the New York City Department of Health, New York City’s HIV rates are more than triple those for the rest of the country.
  • According to the CDC, a third of new AIDS cases are women — up from 1 in 10 at the start of the epidemic.
  • About 94% of teenage females who are newly infected with HIV are black and Hispanic, and Black men in New York City are 6 times more likely to die of AIDS than white men.

So what can you do? HIV testing today is fast, easy and necessary. Knowing your HIV status gives you the power to take control of your life. Most people living with HIV/AIDS aren’t even aware that they have it.

Planned Parenthood of New York City offers rapid HIV testing at its health centers in Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx. The test is done via a simple mouth swab, and results are available the same day. To make an appointment call 1-800-230-PLAN, or visit http://www.ppnyc.org.

New Yorkers, we owe it to ourselves and our partners to make sure we get tested.
