Meet the Activists!

The Planned Parenthood Activist Council is a group that was launched at the beginning of 2005 for people who want to get more involved in Planned Parenthood’s advocacy work. It’s made up of tireless, amazing men and women who do everything from run advocacy campaigns to hold fundraisers and everything in between. Every Tuesday we run “Meet the Activists” a weekly snapshot into who these fabulous volunteers are. You can learn more about the Activist Council, and find out how to join, by going to our web site.

Name: Jay Ackroyd

Age: 51

Profession: IT Consultant

Where do you hail from? Born in NH, grew up in ME

Why did you get involved with the Activist Council? I was getting Political Action Group Facebook announcements, which made me aware of the interesting stuff the group was doing. But then I attended an Activist Council meeting, where the energy, knowledge and commitment really blew me away. And over time, I have found that Planned Parenthood’s primary role as a service organization helps grounds my political activities in a realistic and effective way.

What’s the most exciting/terrifying/invigorating thing you’ve done while a member? The most terrifying was the boot camp [the program which trains Activists to go out and organize their college campuses] training rehearsal, which was strange because I often speak before larger groups. The most invigorating was the lobbying trip to Albany.

Why is it important to be involved? An aggressive small fraction of Americans have succeeded in limiting reproductive freedom for many women.  The only way to counter this is through our own dedicated involvement.

Sound good to you? If you want to get involved, check out our Activist Council!
